Jake Morris-Campbell – Between the Salt and the Ash

Jake Morris-Campbell travels across England’s North East to explore its deep past and uncertain future.

After inheriting his great-grandfather’s Davy lamp, Jake Morris-Campbell sets out on a pilgrimage from Lindisfarne to Durham Cathedral, moving through a region shaped by Christianity, industry, and class. Along the way, he reflects on thirteen centuries of social change, identity, and Englishness. The journey tests his role as a writer, rejects easy narratives of decline, uncovers neglected histories, and celebrates the place he calls home.

“This is a beautiful and significant book. Its blend of history, poetry and travelogue gives a complex and compelling vision of the strange and lovely land of the north. It should be read by us all, wherever we live.”David Almond, author of Skellig
