May Day is the long-awaited new collection from Jackie Kay, former Makar of Scotland and winner of the Guardian Fiction Prize.

Kay’s vivid poems cast an eye over several decades of political activism, from the international solidarity of the Glasgow of Kay’s childhood, through the feminist, LGBT+ and anti-racist movements of the eighties and nineties, up to a global pandemic intersecting with the urgency of Black Lives Matter. Woven through the tales of campaigners such as Paul Robeson are personal reminiscences of her recently deceased mother and father. Filled with grief and longing, yet suffused with love and hope, Kay’s poetry is both challenging and uplifting.
