David Laws - Who Killed Kitchener? In June 1916, Field Marshal Lord Kitchener – best remembered today as the face on the recruiting poster - set sail from Orkney on a secret mission to Russia. Just a mile off land his ship, HMS Hampshire suffered a huge explosion and sank. Crew and passengers numbered 749; only twelve survived. Kitchener’s body was never recovered. Public suspicion fell upon everybody from the German secret service to the IRA, but no definitive answer was ever forthcoming from the government. Using newly released secret files, former-Cabinet minister, David Laws uncovers the truth behind the death that shook Great Britain and which has been shrouded in mystery ever since.
