As part of our Gillian Dickinson Trust Young People’s Festival 2020-21 Arts Council England is supporting us to offer emerging writers, from across the county of Northumberland, the opportunity to create new pieces of written work.

Writers are invited to propose ideas for new commissions that will celebrate the diverse and fascinating county of Northumberland, its inhabitants, agricultural Heritage and historical connections. We welcome specific thoughts on how the applicants would use the development of their commission to connect with local people, organisations, community groups or libraries. The piece of work should be aimed at children/young people.

The purpose of the commissions is to produce new pieces of prose or creative non-fiction, (guideline between 3,000 -5,000 words) that respond to the above brief and to the title ‘Exploring Rural Realities’. The final work will be showcased at the Gillian Dickinson Young People’s Festival in the Spiegeltent in 2020 and in 2021.

The festival is working with local writer Sarah Davy who will support the successful writers during the project to develop their piece of work. Successful applicants will also be expected to take part in an open celebratory event as part of the Young People’s Festival 2020 which runs from 24th – 30th April.
