This workshop is for young people aged 16-20 years .

What is experimental writing? And isn’t all writing an experiment – creating something new that didn’t exist before? Whilst that’s true, some kinds of writing are more ‘experimental’ than others, playing with words, forms and readers’ expectations to create new ways of thinking about what fiction and poetry can be.

Join OCA tutor Vicky MacKenzie for a workshop exploring the creative possibilities of experimental writing, with prompts and exercises to get you writing in unexpected ways – come to discover playful approaches to creating new work and embrace the possibility of glorious failures as well as surprising successes.

Vicky holds an MLitt in Creative Writing from St Andrews University and a PhD in English Literature which explored the connections between contemporary poetry and science. She has tutored on the Creative Writing Summer Programme at St Andrews since 2010, including the youth programme. Recent workshops include ‘Flash Fiction’ at Ilkley Literary Festival and ‘Writing and Walking’ at Sheffield’s Off the Shelf festival.
