The Maths of Life and Death

Few of us really appreciate the full impact of maths on our everyday lives – its presence in the home, the office, the courtroom and the hospital ward. In The Maths of Life and Death, Kit Yates – a senior lecturer in mathematical biology - takes us on a mind-broadening tour of the everyday situations and grand-scale applications of mathematical concepts. Along the way he reveals the true stories of life-changing events in which the application – or misapplication – of maths has played a critical role: patients crippled by faulty genes, businessmen bankrupted by bad algorithms (delete)  and its role in historical events such as the Chernobyl disaster and the Amanda Knox trial.
