Short Story Competition

Written by Ross Groves

There was once a boy called Ben. He lived in a town called Wall, Ben had brown hair, brown eyesand he was 15 years old.

One day, Ben and his best friend Kate were out walking along the big, misty field. "It's going to rain", said Ben. "Should we find some shelter then", said Kate. And indeed it did rain, in fact it was a downfall.

The two of them, Ben and Kate, ran to an abandoned school. Actually, it did not look like a school at all. It looked like a great bug mansion which was boarded up and with ivy all over it.

When Ben and Kate got there, they sat down to have a rest. After a while, Ben started to drift off into his land of sleep. In that dream, it was telling him something. It was telling him... I am sorry to say, but I can't tell you what that dream said. Ok, back on with the story, err... Where was I, oh yes, I was at the abandoned school.

When Ben woke up, he found that Kate was gone! Ben tried all the doors but they were all boarded up and wouldn't budge. He searched the perimeter, but he couldn't find her...

Ben was about to give up, until he saw a shiny door knob. There was ivy all over it. He pushed the ivy out of the way. Ben turned the door handle slowly. He pulled at the handle. He tried kicking the door down. He even tried to pick the lock, but nothing worked. "Nothing", said Ben angrily, "nothing will work to get this door down". So Ben finally gave up and went back to the city of Wall. That night there was a terrifying storm. Ben couldn't sleep. The thunder was like darts, flying at the ground. "Oh I will never get to sleep in this thunder storm", said Ben. So he decided to go and look for Kate at the abandoned school.

Ben strolled through the wet, soggy field. When Ben went through the field, his shoe fell off! "Oh great. They were my new shoes", moaned Ben. He tugged, he pulled and he heaved at the small leather shoe, but nothing would work to get the shoe out of the ground. So Ben took off both shoes and went bare foot.

When ben got to the abandoned school, he went straight to that door that he couldn't open. The ivy wasn't there, so Ben new someone had got there before him! Ben was now worried. Ben noticed there was an inscription on the door which said, "Head teacher". Now Ben's heart was thumping like mad. There was a note on the door saying, "This door will only open at midnight". Ben was now confident he could save Kate because it was almost midnight. And in a second, Ben opened the door and went in...!

It was a small room with a big window and a computer. There was Kate tied up with rope and a strange man holding her. The mad instantly pulled a Knife out of his pocket and put it to Kate's throat. "Leave now or I will kill the girl" said the man.

"You dare" said Ben.

"You want a bet on that" said the man.

"Well, I do have a lot of money on me, you want some. I'll do you a deal. You give me the girl, I give you the money, got it" said Ben.

"Deal", said the man and took the knife off Kate. Ben handed the money to the man and the man released Kate.

"I never knew you had that much money" said Kate, "Where did you get it from?"

"Oh you could say I got it form a mystical dream", said Ben. And they set off together.

"I love you, you know that", said Ben to Kate. "I know" said Kate as they walked through the field the next day. They were on their way to the abandoned school. When they got there they decided to go to the head teacher's office. Ben opened the door and said "Ladies first". And Kate went in but she couldn't go in. This was because there was no room, just a great big wall. There was only two things that they could do; 1, they could look at the wall; 2, they could look at a picture which was stuck on the wall. So Ben and Kate looked at the picture on the wall. "Does that face look familiar?" said Ben.

"Yes", said Kate, "it's that man who had that deal with you" said Kate. But they did not worry that much about the picture and went home.

That night, Kate died in her sleep. When Ben heard about it, he had a broken heart. He arranged her funeral at once. He invited all his friends, but there was even more bad news. The funeral director could not make it. Now Ben was the saddest thing on earth.

A few months past and Ben had gotten over Kate's death. In fact, Ben had fallen in love with another girl. Her name was Clare. Clare had shiny ginger hair which shone in the light. She had little blue eyes which flickered every second.

Ben and Clare were on a nice walk across the field. Ben wanted to show Clare Kate's grave. Kate's grave wasn't in any old grave-yard; it was at the abandoned school at the head teacher's office.

Clare ran up to the grave. "Is this it?" squealed Clare, "Your old girlfriend's grave? How boring. It's only a door that doesn't even open!" But Clare wished she never said that, because just then, a girl opened the door in the wall and did a karate kick on Clare. Then Ben realised who it was. It was Kate. She faked her death. And guess what, Ben and Kate got married and had kids and lived a very nice life.

THE END

But that is not the end completely. The two writers of this story heard this story as a bed-time story told to them by their father so they put him as the author.
