Short Story Competition

Written by Lucy Robinson

One misty day in Victorian times there was a young boy and girl, the boy's name was Christopher, he was thirteen years old. The girls name was Amelia she was nine years old. Christopher was always telling spooky stories to his little sister just to frighten her. Just before bed time Christopher said to Amelia "Shall we go and ask for a biscuit." Amelia nodded her head in agreement, so they headed to the kitchen to ask the cook. The children knew the cook nearly always had a secret tin of biscuits just for them. The problem was whenever the children ate them, funny things began to happen.

The cook Mrs Brown was very pleased to see them, she was very busy as a lot of guests were coming to supper that night and she had to cook nine different courses. Mrs Brown very quickly gave the children two biscuits each and said she had to dash.

Christopher and Amelia went to the nursery and sat quietly munching their yummy biscuits. At seven thirty their nanny told them to go to bed, so they both went to their bedrooms .They were both very tired and very quickly fell fast asleep.

The clock bells began to chime midnight, waking Amelia up. Then she got out of bed and put her slippers on before grabbing her oil lamp and then she went to explore. Amelia crept along the long dark corridor to her brother's room, but Christopher wasn't in his bed. So Amelia went out of the room and tried to think where he could be. Amelia thought the play room would be the best place to try. When she got there, to her disappointment, he was nowhere to be seen. Amelia searched everywhere she tried the bathroom, the drawing room but she couldn't find him. The only other place she could think to try was the basement, she knew they sometimes liked to play hide and seek down there and build camps, the adults rarely went down there, but surly he wouldn't have gone down there at this hour would he?

Amelia was almost too afraid to go down there alone, but she had to find him. So when she found her courage she quietly tiptoed along the dark corridor and climbed down the creaky wooden stairs. When she was in the basement her body trembled with fear. When she started to look around the room she caught a glimpse of Christopher she quickly turned round and saw him sleep walking in to a door in the wall. "That door has never opened for ages why has it opened now? I'd better follow him in there," She said under her breath.

When Amelia reached the door she saw it had pinecones as houses and flowers as flats. When he looked at her back she saw she had a pair of wings. Then a little fairy came up to her. "Hello my name is Sapphire welcome to fairy land I hope you like it here." Amelia told Sapphire her name and that she was looking for Christopher. Sapphire pointed to a very big pinecone that was painted pink. "He might be in there," said Sapphire. Amelia thanked her and flew off to the pinecone. When she was outside of the pinecone she saw Christopher and ran and grabbed his arm before he wandered off again. She carefully managed to get back the door without waking him up.

When they were out of the door Amelia saw it disappear into thin air. She carefully got to her feet and got Christopher out of the room and into bed. Then she went up to her own room and got back in to bed and as soon as her head hit the pillow she was asleep. At half past nine Amelia woke up hearing her nanny calling her name for breakfast, she quickly got out of bed threw on her clothes and went into the dining room to get her breakfast. Her nanny gave her boiled egg and toast. After breakfast Amelia went to the basement to look for the door she had seen last night. When she got to the basement she found the door she had seen last but when she opened it was only a broom cupboard.
